Effect of time of planting and plant spacing on the microenvironment and agronomic characteristics of flue-cured tobacco

The time of planting significantly influenced plant height, leaf area, yield, number of harvested leaves, crop value and grade index. A decreasing trend in plant height from 136.6 to 117.2 cm at maturity was observed as planting time was delayed. Higher number of harvested leaves (24) were taken from the late plantings than early planting (21) but they were of similar size. Higher crop value of P24,309/ha was obtained from early December planting compared to P18,860/ha from late January planting. Plant spacing had a significant effect on yield, number of harvested leaves, and crop value but not on plant height and leaf area. It was apparent that cured yield decrease from 2.73 to 2.47 t/ha as the plant population decreased from 26,666 to 20,000 plants/ha. Highest crop value of P23,158 was obtained from 75 x 50 cm plant spacing. Air and soil temperature within the tobacco plant from November to January ranged from 25 to 32 C and 27 to 33 C, respectively, regardless of row spacing
