Agronomic performance of flue-cured tobacco at different methods of planting

Hilling-up positively affected moisture retention at all stages of measurement, while planting in furrows significantly conserved moisture particularly at 61 and 75 DAT. Planting methods had no influence on the status of the soil moisture when plants were in their vegetative stage. Cultivation did not significantly affect leaf area, specific leaf weight, number of leaves and yield but influenced grade index and crop value. Hilled-up plants produced better leaf quality (grade index = 4.6) and higher crop value (P18,549.00/ha) than those which were not hilled-up. Methods of planting on the other hand, significantly affected leaf area, number of harvested leaves, yield and crop value. Furrow method of planting produced the largest leaf area (688.6 sq. cm.), most number of harvested leaves (21), highest cured yield (2.06 t/ha) and crop value (19,415.00/ha) compared with the other planting methods
