Identification and seed transmission studies of viruses commonly attacking field legumes

Legume viruses commonly attacking cowpea, peanut, mungbean and soybean were identified and studied for seed transmission. Based on symptomatology, host range, electron microscopy and serology, these viruses were identified as cowpea mosaic virus (CMV), peanut mottle virus (PMV), mungbean mottle virus (MMV), and soybean mosaic virus (SMV). Seed transmission rates varied with the different viruses with higher seed transmission obtained from plants infected during the seedling stage. Seed transmission rates were 42.87, 4.0, 52.50 and 32.50 percent for CMV, PMV, MMV and SMV respectively. Lower seed transmission was obtained when plants were infected during the pre-flowering and flowering stages. The study also indicated varying transmission rates relative to seed position within the pod. Higher seed transmission rates were observed from seeds closer to the peduncle.
