A research project was implemented in a tube-well pump service area at Guimba to test procedures to allocate water to fields so that it can be used efficiently for rice and upland crops grown in rotation with rice, to design alternative cropping patterns and test their acceptability to farmers in the service area, and to develop procedures to induce the institutionalization of joint water use decisions by group of farmers. IRRI, MAF, and NIA are collaborating on this research project. Two acceptabilities: crop technology and water distribution. The research site in the service area (about 75 ha.) of a tube-well pump. Soils are deep and uniform and range from silty clays to loams, and are therefore suitable for upland crop cultivation during the dry season. Present cropping intensity is less than 1.5. With minor modifications, the methods used in CS research is on-farm lowland rainfed environments are being used in this partially irrigated environment
