Farmers dry the unthreshed paddy sheaves in open by spreading in the field which is vulnerable for alternate wetting and drying, effect of direct solar radiation and rain. Consequently broken percent increases to high levels and sprouting occurs when rainfall is moderate to high. In the proposed method, the panicles are covered by sheaves of the succeeding one providing good protection against dew, mist and light to moderate showers. Observations on grain moisture content at 2 different layers of sheaves indicated that there was rapid drying in the farmer's method and the moisture content was non-uniform and heterogenous. In the proposed method, it did not fluctuate much and was stable. The kernel recovery was also relatively higher (8 + 10% more). These findings suggest that the proposed method is safe for avoiding the problems of sprouting and alternate wetting and drying of grain, consequent of dew, mist and drizzles during field drying of the paddy sheaves
