A study on the relative responses of corn to different rates of applied phosphorus in Pakchong, Takhli and Sattahip soil series [in Thailand]

Three field experiments, one for each soil series were done to examine the effect of different rates of phosphate fertilizer applied to Pakchong soil series (clayey, kaolinitic, isohyperthermic Oxic Paleustults) in Lopburi province, Takhli soil series (fine, montmorillonitic, isohyperthermic typic Calciustolls) in Nakhorn Ratchasima province and Sattahip soil series (isohyperthermic Typic Quartzipsamments) in Rayong province. Generally, the results obtained revealed that plants grown in Takhli soil series did not show any response to applied phosphorus as well as to various rates of application. Comparatively, the responses to P additions in Pakchong and Sattahip soil series were very striking. Phosphorus additions to these soils help hastened corn flowering, increased percent of shelled corn seed and the average weight of grain per ear. Generally, highest yields of grain and stover were obtained at the same P level of 14.4 kg P2O5 per rai. The magnitude of responses however were maximized at two P rates i.e. at 4.8 kg P2O5 per rai in Sattahip soil and 9.6 kg P2O5 per rai in Pakchong soil. For the nutrients accumulation in different plant parts, phosphorus concentrations in ear leaf, stover and in grain were markedly increased as a result of P additions whereas the influence of P on N, K, Ca and Mg in all the same plant parts were very slight and inconsistent. P treatments depressed Zn accumulations in ear leaf, in stover at harvest and in grain.
