Formulation of quality fish feeds from indigenous raw materials and their effects on the growth of cat fish, Clarias batrachus

One month old cat fish (Clarias batrachus) fingerlings were divided equally into three treatment groups A, B, and C, each with two replications. They were reared in seperate miniponds to study the growth performance on three iso-caloric fish feeds containing 30%, 40% and 50% dietary protein levels prepared from fish meal, mustard oil cake (Brassica sp), rice bran, dry leaves of water hyacinth (Eichornia crassipes), and table salt. The fish feeds were manually made into bite size pellets using barley starch as binding materials. The gain in weight and length were recorded during the experimental period of 165 days from the month of August 1982 to January 1983. The growth of fingerlings were found to increase with the increase of dietary protein in the food. Statistical analysis showed that the feed at a level of 50% protein was significantly better than the feed containing 40% protein
