Development of a method of plant selection by photosynthetical efficiency

Anthers of Nicotiana tabacum cultivar Wisconsin-38, were treated with the mutagen Ethyl Methane Sulphonate (EMS) and cultured to obtain populations of haploid plants of high genetic variability. The selection of haploid plants by photosynthetical efficiency in this populations was carried out in a chamber, with hydroponic culture and an atmosphere with CO2 concentration close to the compensation point of tobacco. Plants that survived 45 days in these conditions, were grown in pots in a greenhouse, and their performance was studied. Selected plants were propagated by "in vitro" culture of buds to obtain complete plants. The growth characteristics, net photosynthesis and chlorophyll content were compared to a population of unselected haploids. The haploid character was studied by chromosome counting. The results show that this system of selection of plants, has capacity to select plants by CO2 assimilation rate in population of high genetic variability
