Experimental studies of pathogenic agents transmitted by ticks (Babesia, Theileria, Cytoecetes and Anaplasma) in sheep of the Basque Country

The clinical and haematological changes associated with four haematic parasites (Babesia, Theileria, Cytoecetes and Anaplasma), when splenectomized and non-splenectomized sheep were inoculated with blood of a sheep from Alava, are described. Because there was a suspicion of some degree of premunition in the experimental animals, it was not possible to draw a conclusion on the pathogenicity of Babesia and Theileria. Cytoecetes phagocytophila, which was not known to exist in Spain hitherto, produced a short period of fever and leucopenia after the fourth day p.i., Anaplasma spp., which in some animals only produced mucosal paleness and some rise in the body temperature as clinical signs, caused anaemia in all the animals, and death in a splenectomized sheep. The use of long-acting oxytetracycline was beneficious against anaplasmosis but could not sterilize the infection
