Cervico-vaginal mucus collected from pregnant and non-pregnant (cycled normally but failed to conceive) Jersey cows differed significantly in the concentration of calcium and magnesium. Concentration of Ca (mg/100 ml) was lower during oestrus phase (9.48 in pregnant and 13.16 in non-pregnant) than in nonoestrus phase (28.37 in pregnant and 21.87 in non-pregnant). The positive state of oestrus and early pregnancy can be ascertained by testing the cervicovaginal mucus for calcium ions (13.16 mg/100 ml during oestrus and 28.37 mg/100 ml during nonoestrus phase). Magnesium content (mg/100 ml) was significantly higher in the non-pregnant group than in the pregnant group both during oestrus (3.78 vs. 2.48) and nonoestrus (4.53 vs 4.00) phases
