A study was undertaken on the combining ability in onion in a 8 x 8 diallel cross excluding reciprocals. Out of the eight parents, three parents namely P 3 (Pusa White Flat), P 4 (Sel. 102-1) and P 8 (Punjab Selection) which had high values for yield and its contributing characters had shown high g.c.a. effects for these characters. Parent 6 (Sel. 126) had the best performance for dehydration and storage characters and also showed very high g.c.a. effects for these characters. It contributed for the dehydration and storage qualities in the hybrids also. The best performing hybrids had very high s.c.a. effects. The crosses which showed high s.c.a. effects can be best utilized in heterosis breeding
