Prevalence and clinico-pathology of naturally occurring fascioliasis and biliary amphistomiasis in buffaloes

Studies on the prevalence and clinico-pathology of naturally infected Fasciola gigantica and Gigantocotyle explanatum buffaloes indicated 61.78% infection with either of the two or both types of parasites. Highest infection rate was observed for F. gigantica (29.26%) and lowest for G. explanatum (19.51%). Significantly low values of total erythrocyte count, haemoglobin, packed-cell volume, and accelerated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and high values of total eosinophil count, eosiniphil: total leukocyte ratio, per cent eosinophil, per cent monocyte, glutamate dehydrogenase and arginase were recorded in F. gigantica infection. No significant changes in these indices could be seen in G. explanatum infected buffaloes. The histopathological changes in liver associated with the 2 types of infections have been described. F. gigantica infection was more harmful than G. explanatum infection in livers of buffaloes
