The economics of intercropping newly planted sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) with food legumes in Jamaica

Budgets for sugarcane-legume enterprises were estimated and a break-even quantity of intercrop determined. Budgets were planned for competing crops, and the return on investment for sugarcane-legume enterprises calculated and compared with annual return on investment for individual crops and crop rotations. A sensitivity analysis showed that only the profitability of the sugarcane-peanut enterprise appeared adversely affected by yield reductions of sugarcane-legume. The sugarcane-legume enterprise appears able to compete with many of the commonly grown field crops and rotations and can obtain high investment returns and should be considered as an alternative
