Effects of size of stem cutting and shoot density on the growth and yield of pepper (Piper nigrum var. Kuching) [in Peninsular Malaysia]

Two experiments were carried out at MARDI Research Station, Kluang from 1980 to 1984 to determine the effects of size of stem cutting and shoot density on the growth and yield of pepper. The treatments in the initial experiment were 3, 4, 5 and 6-node stem cuttings planted with 1, 2, 3 and 4 nodes respectively, below the ground. This experiment carried out in the nursery indicated that various sizes of stem cuttings had no effect on the percentage of cuttings, 'struck', number of auxillary shoots developed, shoot length and diameter. In the field experiment, the main treatments were similar to the initial experiment and the sub-treatments were the retention of 3, 5, 7 and 9 climbing shoots per vine. Vines developed from three-node stem cuttings were slower in their initial growth when compared with the other treatments. For the matured vines, no significant difference in stem diameter and canopy spread was found among the vines in the main and sub-treatments. Higher fresh berry yields were obtained from vines developed from five-node stem cuttings which had three or five orthotropic shoots to bear the fruiting branches
