Preliminary characterization of oil palm [Elaeis guineensis] stem as raw material for pulp and paper

The assessment on variations in density, fiber morphology and chemical composition showed that the whole oil palm stem could give usable fibres for pulp and paper production. Some interesting results were obtained and several discernible patterns of variation were noted. The wood density was observed to increase gradually from the central zone to the outer zone of the stem while the lowest density was found at the bottom of the stem. In general, fibre length decreased with an increase in height and increased towards the centre of the stem. Fibre width appeared to decrease with height and towards the central region after an initial increase near the periphery. While the cell-wall thickness showed no consistent pattern of variation with height, there was a decrease from the outer most zone towards the core. The low Runkel ratio, indicated the suitability of oil palm stem fibres for paper production. No generalization in the variation in chemical composition across the stem could be drawn.
