Response of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) to various durations of water stress at different growth stages [Philippines]

Growth of tobacco was significantly reduced by a 16-day or more stress. Reduction in leaf size which increased with stress duration was most profound at 25 and 35 DAT, and insignificant at 45 DAT. Flowering was delayed with stress extending for 16 days or longer. Transpiration rate and relative water content of the leaves during stress differed with growth stage. Transpiration rate remained high after a few days of stress at younger growth stage but declined immediately following the imposition of water stress at older growth stage. Relative water content declined linearly with stress duration at earlier growth stage but remained relatively high at later growth stage. There was a concurrent increase in diffusive leaf resistance and decrease in transpiration rate decreased with age. Dry matter and economic yield decreased with increasing stress duration at 25 and 35 DAT. The decrease was apparent only with stress for 16 days or longer at 45 DAT. Lower leaf quality was obtained with stress applied at the younger growth stage than at the later growth stage. Nicotine content of the leaves increased while reducing sugars decreased with prolonged stress duration
