A biodegradable controlled release formulation useful in promoting growth and feed utilization in ruminant animals which comprises from about 20 to about 80 weight percent of a polyether antibiotic intimately dispersed throughout a copolymer derived from about 60 to about 95 weight percent of lactic acid and about 40 to about 5 weight percent of glycolic acid, said copolymer having an inherent viscosity of about 0.08 to about 0.30 when measured in chloroform, said polymer having a weight average molecular weight of about 6000 to about 35000
