Variation in plant hormone system [of rice, tobacco, coconut and potato buds; Philippines]

Determination of the amount of endogenous abscisic acid (ABA), indole acetic acid (IAA), gibberellin (GA) and cytokinins (CK) were carried out on leaves of rice, tobacco and coconut and on dormant buds of potato tubers using standard chemical methods. Higher levels of abscisic acid was associated with cultivars of salt-sensitive rice, drought susceptible tobacco and drought susceptible coconut. There was no difference in the amount of ABA in tungro-susceptible or tungro-resistant rice cultivars. Analysis of IAA showed no definite trend related to salt or tungro-tolerance in rice. When tissues of rice were exposed to salt or disease stress, ABA-accumulation was observed for the susceptible varieties while increased IAA levels was only observed in the tungro-infected susceptible cultivar. Buds taken from potato tubers 21 days after lifting showed no difference in the ABA and GA content among the different cultivars. However, the mean value for buds from the two representative short-dormancy-period cultivars contain the least amount of GA and ABA. This same group was also found to contain the highest CK level while the medium-dormancy-period ones contain the lowest amount of IAA and CK
