Influence of presowing rippering or rolling on more important physical properties of heavy soil and yields

In three field experiments carried out successively on the same field the influence of opening or packing of soil before sowing on physical properties of heavy soil and crops of successively cultivated plants: spring barley, winter colza and winter wheat was tested. Various opening degrees were obtained by harrowing with an ordinary pendulous harrow with a string shaft down to 10 and 20 cm. For packing a smooth heavy roller, weighing approx. 5 t, was used with or without the Campbell roller. Opening or packing of soil before seeding significantly changed its density, compactness, general and non-capillary porosity and in lesser degree the capillary water volume and moisture content. The maximum differentiation of density in the terms of seeding amounted to 1.19 - 1.52 g/cu. cm in the 0 - 5 cm layer of soil, whereas 1.30 - 1.58 g/cu. cm in the 20 - 25 cm layer. The differentiated physical properties of soil influenced growth and crops of plants. The cultivation of heavy soil should intend to its intensive opening before seeding. (Author)
