Scientific achievements in the problematics of cereals and present development trends in this field are characterized against the background of a wide review of the litereture concerning ecology, fertilization, breeding and protection of cereals, their cultivation mechanization and energy consumption. On the basis of statistical data throwing additional light on the whole problematics the ways of equalizing grain balances in the world-wide scale are discussed while stressing the yield-forming functions of interacting production factors
