Impact of cadmium in activated sludge on some vegetables and nutrient elements

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of cadmium in activated sludge in terms of growth, cadmium accumulation and mineral content such as nitrogen and phosphorus in vegetables. The seeds of the experimental vegetables, namely Chinese kale (Brassica olboglabra Var.), Pe-tsai Chinese cabbage (Brassica pekinensis Var.) and Pak-choi Chinese cabbage (Brassica chinensis Var. parachinensis), were sown in seed flats and the 2-week-seedlings were transplanted into the experimental pots, containing 0, 1.2 and 2.4 percent of activated sludge from a carbonated beverage factory; and 0, 1, 10, 100 and 1,000 ppm of cadmium sulphate salt. The activated sludge significantly increased the wet weight, dry weight, nitrogen and phosphorus contents of the plants, and also increased the number of leaves and height of Pe-tsai Chinese cabbage. At 1,000 ppm of cadmium in soil, the average concentration of cadmium in Pe-tsai Chinese cabbage stem and Pak-choi Chinese cabbage root was 291.47 ppm and Cadmium accumulation in the roots was higher than in the stems. Therefore, could it be concluded that in the absence of cadium contamination activated sludge from a carbonated beverage factory tended to be a good and reliable fertilizer for vegetables
