Methods for rapid vegetative propagation of taro

In greenhouse and field studies in the Philippines, taro (Colocasia esculenta) was rapidly propagated vegetatively with the use of single-node rhizome cuttings, and cormels with apical shoot removed. The technique used is easy and does not require sophisticated equipment. Source of the cuttings (apical, middle or basal portion of rhizome), N level in the nutrient medium and length of time of storage of rhizomes at ambient temperature prior to planting did not affect sprouting. Removing the nodal scale and inclined planting of the cuttings hastened sprouting. Decapitated cormels produced between 5-14 rooted shoots in 60 days. New plants derived from either method were ready for field planting after 60-90 days of hardening-off
