The major applications of genetic engineering discussed are in the pharmaceutical industry for the production of antibiotics, enzymes, antibodies and vaccines, in the chemical industry where biomass may be used as a raw material, in food processing, pollution control and enhanced oil recovery. Its applications in plant breeding are described in greater detail. The natural barriers limiting genetic change are bypassed through cell fusion or insertion of foreign DNA. An example given is the 'nif' gene, responsible for nitrogen fixation in certain bacteria, which could be transferred to plants such as cereals
