Some perspectives on the role of aquaculture in the development of small farm systems in the Eastern Caribbean

Marine fishery resources in the Lesser Antilles are at or near maximum sustainable yield or are overfished and show limited prospects for further exploitation. The regional potential for fish and invertebrate mariculture is discussed with particular reference to utilization of mangroves and salt ponds. The experiences in Jamaica where Tilapia nilotica culture was developed amongst small farmers, are recounted. Annual production increased from 2,200 lbs. in 1977 to 69,600 lbs in 1982. Operations are labour intensive and require low capital investment. Simple culture systems utilizing agricultural by-products and manures as feedstuffs and integration with crop and livestock farming activities are stressed. The active role of governments in assisting the development of small farmer aquacultue is discussed. Sociocultural factors influencing adoption of aquaculture technology are outlined
