Very little data is available on the extent of post harvest losses in St. Lucia. Based on discussions with supermarket personnel, WINBAN, St. Lucia Marketing Board, market vendors, farmers and other knowledgeable persons, a few estimates were made. Losses in bananas are in the region of 35 %. Fruits and vegetables experience variable but significant losses. Root crops experience an estimated 20 % loss. Losses in cocoa and coconuts are small. Breadfruit is estimated to suffer about 50 % loss. With the exception of bananas, very little is being done to seriously tackle the problems of post harvest losses of perishables and durables in St. Lucia
