The soils of Montserrat, entirely volcanic in origin are classified by Soil Taxonomy. Land capability is limited by stoniness, shallow soil profile, erosion and low moisture retention by the soil. Soil pHs are near neutral, with high cation exchange capacity and generally low organic matter and N contents. The suitability of the various soils for selected crops is given
