Leucaena as a protein source
1985
Oakes, A.J. | Oakes, M.R.
A review article summarising the protein production potential and quality of L. leucocephala as a human and animal food. Unimproved varieties can produce 1,000-2,000 kg/ha per year of protein, depending on environmental and management conditions. Amino acid content is balanced and similar to alfalfa, also supplying B-carotene, xanthophyll, calcium, phosphorus and vitamin K. Use of leaves, flowers, fruiting pods as human food is discussed. Foods prepared from, and processing of leucaena seeds are described. Digestibility trials with livestock are summarized
