Effect of Ethephon on the ripering of paprica pepper (Capsicum annuum)

The effect of Ethephon (2-chloroethylphosphonic acid) on two greek paprica pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) cultivars (PT-17 and PT-152) was tested in field trials in 1976 and 1977. Factors studied were: (a) concentration of Ethephon (0, 200, 400 and 600 ppm), (b) degree of fruit ripeness at the time of the first spray (10-15 % or 30-40 % of the fruits per plot were ripe or half-ripe), (c) number of sprays on the same plot (one, two or three at one week intervals). An once over harvest of the fruits was done about 20 days after the first Ethephon application and the fruits were classified into three categories: red, red-chocolate and green. Fruits in plants treated with Ethephon ripened earlier and consequently the control plots had a lower percentage of1017 ripe and half-ripe fruits. In most cases all Ethephon dosages were equally effective. The degree of fruit ripeness at the time of Ethephon application and the total number of sprays were significant factors in a few cases only, sometimes the two cultivars differed in their response to Ethephon.
