The effects of a sucrose ester coating material, Prolong, on shelf life and ethylene evolution, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid content, and ethylene forming enzyme activity in 'Tsugaru' apples have been investigated. Apples treated with 3 % Prolong were stored at room temperature and 8 deg C for 4 to 6 weeks. Prolong did not affect ethylene synthesis, respiration activity, and changes of total soluble solids and acids content in fruits but reduced weight loss and the rates of softening during subsequent shelf life. It was concluded that Prolong has beneficial effect on 'Tsugaru' apples in air storage
