Possible development of small-scale hydroelectric power plants in Lebanon

Current societal concerns about pollution from using fossil fuels and the dangers of nuclear power have placed increasing emphasis on hydropower, a renewable energy source. Though large power projects have been in vogue, there is a current awareness of the potential energy contribution from a network of small stations, especially in developing countries. Thus, the power-generating potential of five of Lebanon's rivers - Litani, Awali, Hasbani, Zahrani and Saitaniq - was assessed based on hydrometric data from guaging stations on these rivers. Flow duration curves were drawn using daily flow data. Because of the good relationship between average annual flow and the 75% duration flow, the latter could be predicted where no daily records existed. The study suggested installing a network of 75 mini-hydro stations, ranging fr0887om 75 to 1200 KW capacity, on these rivers.
