Seed borne fungi and bacteria of soyabean in Nigeria

Four varieties (Malayan, Tgm 344, M98 and Congo Yellow) of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) cultivated in Nigeria, and obtained from different sources, were tested for seed-borne fungi and bacteria. The organisms which were isolated represented the following genera of fungi: Aspergillus, Chaetomium, Colletotrichum, Curvularia, Fusarium, Helminthosporium, Nigrospora, Rhizoctonia, Sclerotium, Pestalotia Pencillium, and the following genera of bacteria: Pseudomonas, Xanthomonas and Bacillus. Fewer species of microorganisms were found associated with the separate parts of the seeds than with the whole seeds. Pestalotia is reported for the first time as being seed-born on soybean in Nigeria
