Drought stress depressed nitrogen fixation more than nitrogen assimilation. The r2048esulting decrease of Acetylene Reduction Activity was related to poorer growth of the vegetative parts of the non-irrigated plants. Winter sowing improved grain and total dry matter production and stimulated ARA to a greater extent than total NRA. These effects could be explained by better growth conditions and less competition between pods and nodules in winter-sown chickpeas. Although nitrogen assimilation is essential to start plant growth and for subsequent establishment of good fixation activity, in fertile soils nitrate supply simultaneously increased assimilation and decreased fixation.
