Physiology and genetics of Rhizobium nodulating chickpeas (Cicer arietinum L.)

Twenty-two strains of chickpea rhizobia of different geographical origins were examined for the cultural, physiological, and genetic properties. These strains were diverse with regard to their growth rates on yeast extract-mannitol medium, but all of them acidified this medium and the majority produced an acid reaction with serum zone formation on litmus milk. Low activities of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase were detected in six strains. 1-3 plasmids of molecular weight ranging from 36 to over 380 Mdal we1101re reproducibly resolved in 16 strains, but no plasmids were observed in the six remaining strains. Structural nif genes, homologous to nif DH of R. meliloti, were highly conserved and were not located on detectable plasmids in 21 of the 22 strains.
