An experiment was conducted during 1985 T. aman season at the experimental farm of the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh to evaluate the effect of different levels of nitrogen fertilizer on the growth and yield of newly developed rice mutant NS-5 in a randomized block design with 5 nitrogen levels namely 0,40,60,80 and 100 kg N/ha in three replications. Sixty kg P(2)O(5), 40 kg K(2)O, 5 kg Zn and 20 kg S per hectare were used as basal dose for all treatments. The results showed an increase of grain yield with the increase of N fertilizer applications up to 80 kg/ha but yield decreased significantly with 100 kg N/ha compared to 60 and 80 kg N/ha. However 80 kg N/ha gave the highest increase in yield (53.58%) over the control. This treatment also gave better performance in respect of plant height tillering, panicle length and number of grains/panicle compared to control.
