Suppression of virus spread in locally-grown seed potatoes by eliminating the source of infection with roguing

During 1983-6 four field experiments were carried out at Akhelia to evaluate the effectiveness of roguing in preventing the spread of potato leaf roll and Y viruses (PLRV and PVY) in potatoes grown for production of seed. The mother seed used was imported class A stock, to which PLRV or PVY-infected tubers were added. Virus transmission to healthy plants during the growing season depended on the naturally occurring aphid populations. The number of aphids per 100 leaves was about 500 in 1983, less than 20 in 1986 and around 100 in 1984 and 1985. Roguing treatments in 1983 completely failed to suppress the spread of either virus, apparently because of the unusually severe aphid infestation. In 1984-6, however, roguing at weekly or semiweekly intervals reduced significantly the spread of PLRV and, to a lesser extent, of PVY. The highest levels of control, 54-68% for PLRV and 19-83% for PVY, were obtained with weekly roguing. These results indicate that roguing can help prevent excessive virus infection in locally-grown seed potatoes, provided it is applied correctly and in combination with other control measures
