Genetic improvement [of tannia, Xanthosoma sagittifolium, and dasheen, Colocasia esculenta]
1984
The objective was to find clones of the edible aroids, chiefly tannia (Xanthosoma sagittifolium), with high levels of adaptability and tolerance to disease, particularly the tannia root rot disease. This was approached in 3 ways: 1) Clones from throughout the 5 islands were brought together for selection and maintenance in 5 germplasm collections. Three clones, 'Jabba', 'Toby' and 'Calaloo Tannia' showed some disease resistance, 2) evaluation of the elite cultivars found in 4 islands in National Elite Variety trials isolated 3 superior cultivars, 3) the selection of hybrid tannia in diseased fields resulted in the identification of 103 clones from 15 promising hybrids. A continued search for clones to be subjected to high selection pressure in diseased fields is planned; another season of Elite Varietal trials and further selection of hybrids
