The activities of the Crop Research Institute of the CSIR (Ghana) are highlighted. The Institute has identified contributory factors to the decline in food crop production. These include poor fertility of the soils, short fallow periods, inherent low yield potential of the crops and the build up of disease and pests. Four high yielding varieties of maize (La Posta, Dobidi, Aburotia, and Safita), and four improved cowpea varieties have been developed and introduced, in addition to proper management and proper agronomic practices, to farmers. This has resulted in a steep rise in yield of produce from 100 kg/ha to 1500 kg/ha. The institute is also involved in research on other food crops and organisation of workshop on agricultural research
