Pulping of Eucalyptus deglupta by the sulphate process - influence of alkaline concentration on cooking

The influence of alkaline concentration during the sulphate process on chemical composition, fibre dimensions and pulping properties of Eucalyptus deglupta were investigated at constant sulphidity. The average fibre width and wall thickness were 17.58 and 5.11 units respectively, the coefficient of flexibility of the fibres is above 40%. Low breaking length and low tear factor were observed. High alkali concentration resulted in high rates of lignin removal, acceleration of the rate of attack on the resistant hemicellulose and cellulose, and caused degradation of cellulose fibres. Pulp yield was influenced by the relatively low lignin content and the high holocellulose content. These indicate that it is economically advantageous to use this species of wood for paper making with low active alkali, preferably 18% or less to produce papers of high strength
