The effect of disbudding and spacing on yield, dry matter content and bulb size in Bawku Onion (Allium cepa L.) on two types of soil

Disbudding was used to control flowering in the Bawku Onion at two spacing, 10 cm x 10 cm, and 10 cm x 20 cm. Disbudding gave highly significant increases in yield, dry matter content and bulb size. The spacing treatment of 10 cm x 20 cm gave highly significant increases in mean bulb weight and bulb size, but showed no significant change in dry matter content as compared with the spacing 10 cm x 10 cm which showed a highly significant increase in total yield over the former spacing. Disbudding is a solution to the low yield exhibited by this onion variety. Low plant density produces bigger and heavier bulbs but lower total yield than a high density. A balance between high density and low plant density is needed for optimum yields
