In an experiment carried out on an Aquic chromudert mapped as Litchfield clay at the Coastal Plain Field Research Unit of the National Agricultural Research Institute, it was found that when nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) were applied at rates of 80 kg N/ha and 30 kg P/ha there were significant increases in yield of both rice varieties, Diwani and Starbonnet. Plant height in this treatment appeared higher at 35 and 42 days after sowing (DAS) for both varieties than in the high N level treatments (N160 and N120). Tillering in Diwani appeared higher in the high N level treatments (N160 and N120) than in N80 P30 treatment, while for variety Starbonnet, the N80 P30 treatment seemed higher. Yields and tiller number were higher in Diwani than Starbonnet in all the treatments, highlighting Diwani's response to nitrogen fertilization
