Time of fertilizer application trial with corn, Zea mays L - Pioneer X 304

The experiment was conducted to determine the most suitable time for application of two split doses of nitrogen and potassium to hybrid corn. The treatments were: 1) half nitrogen and potassium applied at planting and the remainder at initiation of female flowering parts, 2) half nitrogen and potassium applied at planting, and the remainder at 30 days after germination, 3) half nitrogen and potassium applied 2 weeks after germination and remainder at initiation of female flowering parts and 4) half nitrogen and potassium applied 2 weeks after germination and remainder at 30 days after germination. Results of grain yields showed no significant differences between treatments. The experiment was sited in an area with slopes from about 10-20 %; it was observed that regardless of treatment, corn yields bore an inverse relationship with percentage slope, hence suggesting that cultivation should be confined to the flat or gently sloping areas
