Insect and mite pests of corn and sweet corn (Zea mays L.)

A replicated field experiment was conducted for the purpose of recording pest incidence in both corn and sweet corn and to determine the differential susceptibility of the 2 crops to pests. Crickets were found damaging both crops a few days after germination and army worms, 11 days after sowing; aphid infestation was observed 52 days after, and mites, 56 days after sowing. At harvest, stem borers were observed on both crops and were found to be heavily parasitized by the Amazon fly, Metagonistylum minense. With respect to ear damage, sweet corn was found to be infested with pink larvae, aphids, sap beetles, stem borers and ear worms. For both crops, plots treated with insecticides for the control of the pests yielded almost the same as untreated plots
