The effect of soybean seed size on yield of the subsequent crop, part 1: Relationship between the size of soybean seed with the growth and productivity of subsequent crop; spaced-plant

An experiment aimed at studying the role of soybean seed size in determining the yielding ability of the subsequent crop was undertaken in a green-house at the Department of Agronomy and Horticultural Science, the University of Sydney. This experiment used Wayne cultivar, kept at 25 centigrade day and 19 centigrade night temperatures. It was planted on October, 1976. Small (109 mg.), medium (219 mg.), and large (328 mg. seeds were planted under widely spaced conditions using a complete random design. In order to follow the growth pattern of plant throughout the whole growing period, growth analysis using frequent small harvests was practiced. Attributes studied included the rate of seedling emergence, the emergence percentage, the height of plant, number of trifoliate leaves, plant dry matter, age of plant at maturity, number of nodes per plant, number of branches per plant, number of beans per plant, weight of individual beans, and yield of bean per plant. It was found that seed size affected the emergence percentage. The rate of seedling emergence, however, was not affected by seed size. Under widely spaced conditions, with the exception of its effect on the number of branches per plant, the effect of seed size on the growth of plant existed only during the early growing period. Thus, most of the yield components at maturity were not affected by seed size. Therefore, the bean yield of plants was not affected by the size of seed from which they were grown.
