Response of Amaranthus spp. to various light intensities

This experiment tested the growth response of 7 Amaranthus spp. to various light intensities, in order to help design intercropping patterns. The Amaranthus species tested were A. tricolor, A. blitum, A. spinosus, A. grasilus, A. paniculatus, A. hendri and A. caudatus and the light intensities were 100, 15 and 2 percent. The light intensity influenced the temperature and air humidity and plant growth as indicated by the plant height, leaf size, number of leaves, flowering time and biomass. The best light intensity for plant development was 15 percent, followed by 100 percent and 2 percent. This means that Amaranthus spp. can be intercropped with taller plants. Decreasing the light intensity will lead to lower temperature and higher air humidity and will delay flowering time. All the Amaranthus spp. tested had similar response to light intensity, temperature and air humidity.
