In Caribbean islands like Barbados, damage to shallow water corals, nutrient enrichment and bacteriological contamination of coastal waters and beach depletion are environmental problems posing long term difficulties for the tourist industry. Greater attention needs to be paid to conservation of near-shore corals from damage by recreational boats and looting, the reduction of sewage pollution and discouragement of construction close to the shoreline. The necessary legislation already exists but needs more conscientious enforcement
