Prevalence of some soil borne fungi and their population trends in two locations cultivated with tomato under different cultural practices in the Jordan Valley

Effect of agricultural practices: non-fumigated plastic house, fumigated with methyl bromide at a rate of 75 gm/m** (-2), mulched and non-mulched open field treatments, on seasonal variation of soil-borne pathogens was studied at two locations. The fold dilution method was followed. 34 different species of fungi were isolated: Fusarium oxysporum, solany; Verticillium dahliae, Pythium spp., Alternaria solani, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum were among the most frequently isolated from the four treatments. Results indicated that the high populations soil-borne fungi were obtained from: non-fumigated and fumigated plastic houses, mulched and non-mulched open field treatments, respectively. Verticillium dahliae, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Rhizoctonia solani and Pythium spp. were found to be prevalent at low soil temperatures and high populations of these fungi were obtained during March and April. Fusarium, Aspergillus and Penicillium spp. were found to be prevalent at high soil temperature; high populations were obtained from them during May and June. Fusarium solani was the most frequently isolated-high population and was recovered from non-fumigated plastic house treatment, while low populations were obtained for Rhizoctonia solani from non-mulched open field treatment. Numbers of fungal propagules that were recovered from fumigated plastic house treatment were declined for two months after fumigation, than the numbers increased to reach their original level
