Response of dryland wheat to nitrogen and phosphorus in some Moroccan soils [lithic rendoll; calcixeroll; chromoxerert]

Third year data from the soil test calibration study for spring wheat in farm trials in the semi-arid Chaouia region of Morocco were reported. The specific objectives were to determine the influence of N (0, 40, 80, 120 kg/ha, P (0, 20, 40, and 80 kg/ha and previous crop (wheat, legume, fallow or corn) on N uptake and dry matter yield and anthesis, as well as grain and dry matter yield, of Nesma wheat grown on three representative soils of contrasting depth and productivity; lithic rendoll, calcixeroll and chromoxerert. Response data were related to soil NO3 and NaHCO3-P. Seasonal rainfall was above average and well distributed. Grain and dry matter yield were influenced by soil type, previous crop, and N fertility, but not by applied P. Higher yields were from the vertisol and where a legume was grown the previous year. Consequently, the response to applied N following legumes was insignificant, while it was highest after wheat and fallow and intermediate after corn. Responses to N generally were non-significant above 80 kg/ha. The data differed from the previous drier years in not having a P response, but generally coincided with observations on the influence of N and previous crop on wheat
