Attitudes and productivity of coconut farmers in Buhi, Camarines Sur, Philippines
1987
Tayco, A.C.
The majority of the respondents had a high degree of feeling of personal importance and their aspirations were centered on economic well-being such as owning a land and becoming rich. They saw the necessity of providing higher education for children as a vehicle for social mobility. Slightly less than one-half of the respondents aspired for higher education for the children. Generally, they had a positive attitude toward coconut farming and toward their present condition despite their being poor. Most of the farmers in this study were moderately innovative and highly diversified in their occupation, having two or more other sources of income. They marked a high degree of responsiveness to organizational activities. The chi-square test of relationship between the independent (level of living and socio-psychological background) and dependent (attitudes and productivity) variables showed that: 1) mass media exposure and overall modernity were related to the attitudes (toward coconut farming, toward present condition aspirations and feeling of personal importance) of the respondents; 2) networth and income were significantly related to farm productivity of coconut farmers; and 3) attitudes and productivity were not related to each other.
