Integrated weed management in broadcast-seeded flooded rice (Oryza sativa) [Philippines]

Results indicate that efficiency of N application is best at low N rate with good weed management. In the second trial, rice plants were taller when N was applied in three splits than in two splits in butachlor and untreated plots at seeding rates of 100 and 200 kg/ha. At 100 kg seeds/ha, weed weight was lower when N was applied in two splits. Doubling the seeding rate reduced weed weights and masked the effect of N management. When N was applied in three splits, the short statured IR64 rice gave the highest grain yield in butachlor-treated plots. The intermediate-statured IR29723-143-3-2-1 yielded best without herbicide treatment. When N was applied in two splits, both varieties gave similar yields which were higher than that of a tall traditional variety, Binato, in both weeding regimes. In butachlor-treated plots, IR64 yielded higher when N was applied in three splits. Results indicate that the efficiency of split application of N can be optimized with an effective weed control, particularly with N-responsive cultivars such as IR64
