Bialaphos: a promising organic herbicide for the control of weeds in rubber plantations [Philippines]

Two experiments were carried out to evaluate the efficacy of bialaphos on the control of weeds in immature and mature rubber (Hevea brasiliensis Muell. Arg.) plantations at the Southern Mindanao Agricultural Research Center [South Cotabato, Philippines] from April to September, 1986. Bialaphos provided adequate control (70% control) of thick stands of Imperata cylindrica (L.) Beauv. for 45 days at 2.0 kg ai/ha and for 52 days at 3.0 kg ai/ha. At the lower rates (0.25 and 1.0 kg ai/ha) bialaphos did not provide adequate control of this weed in immature rubber. In mature rubber plantations, four weed species; Pasparium conjugatum Berg., Digitaria adscendans (Kunth.) Henr., I. cylindrica and Centrocema pubescens Benth. were adequately controlled at 10 days after application. The duration of adequate control was 65 days at 2.0 kg ai/ha and 82 days at 3.0 kg ai/ha. Rates of 0.75 and 1.0 kg ai/ha provided a shorter duration of control of less than 45 days. The efficacy of bialaphos at 2.0 and 3.0 kg ai/ha was comparable to glufosinate-ammonium at 1.0 kg/ha but inferior to glyphosate at 2.0 kg/ha.
